How to add products on WooCommerce ( simple, variants)?

Putting up a website and choosing a design is just the beginning of building an online store. It still needs to be “filled” with products or services that the company offers. Adding products is a long process, but it is not very difficult with WooCommerce. This plug-in was developed in such a way that the whole thing is quite simple and intuitive. Using all available functions, you can not only add individual products, but also describe, classify and associate them. In the following post, we will introduce you to how to add a simple and variant product.

Basic information.

Whether you are adding a simple product or one with variants, there are some basic data that you need to fill in in both cases. Such information is:

  • Product name – this issue should be well thought out, as it is mainly responsible for what customers first see. It is visible on the product card, but also in categories and search results.
  • Description – this is the place where you should write out all the information about the product or service. It is from the description that potential customers learn more about the offer, and this influences their purchasing decisions.
  • Short description – a place for a short text (we recommend a maximum of 2 sentences), which usually displays next to the button to add the product to the cart.
  • Product tags – are nothing more than individual words or phrases that you want to assign to a product. They have to do with searches on the site, so it’s a good idea to include potential words a customer might use.
  • Image/Photo – You choose one main image to represent your product or service. Care should be taken to ensure that it is of high quality. Optionally, you can also choose to insert more and create a gallery. It will be displayed on the product card.
  • Categories – these should be created even before inserting specific products or services. These are the areas into which you want to divide your store. If you sell teas, you can bet on such categories as white, green, black, herbal blends, etc.
  • Price and stock quantity – this is the information you should include with each product, but where to add it will vary depending on whether you are adding a simple product or one with variants.

Simple product

After adding all the above-mentioned information, select the product type. A simple product is one with fixed features and the customer doesn’t have to choose anything. The description contains all the information and there are no different variants of one product, such as having only one color, size, etc.

For this type of listing, we have the option to select standard fields such as: product type (virtual/downloadable), price (standard and promotional), SKU, stock, availability (whether in stock or on order), dimensions, weight, shipping class, related products and attributes. With the last piece of information we will stop and describe it in a little more detail.

Attributes are nothing more than such information as, for example, color, size, material from which it is made, there may also be a brand. How to set it up? Go to the tab – Attributes. Then we select: New Attribute and click Add. We add a name, e.g. color, and enter an attribute, e.g. red. In the case of a simple product, we only check the “Visible on the product page” option. We save and can already publish the entire product at this point.

Product with variants.

If you have a product that has several versions of, for example, color, but other than that one or two features are no different, it is best to set up the product with variants. Such a setting allows a potential customer to switch between different options within the same item. Variants are created based on the assigned attributes, which should be separated by the character: |. If we have several available colors then in the attribute name we write “Color” and in the value: Red| Green| Black, etc. You can set several attributes and combine them in combinations, and so, for example, the attribute red is combined with the value size: L. As you can see, products with variants, provide a lot of possibilities and are especially useful for those who sell products or services that differ in only one or two attributes.

Each option can have its own price, availability, and also in the description tab you can add some more detailed information about that particular option. Before you proceed to complete and set the variants, it is necessary to complete the attributes and in this case also check the “For variants” option. You can automatically create a combination for all added variants or prepare it manually. Only now you can proceed to edit the various options. You can customize such information as price, availability, weight, dimensions and, of course, another photo that shows the product.

Simplicity in management.

Adding, editing or deleting products in WooCommerce is extremely intuitive and easy, so with a little support and instruction, customers can manage the offerings in their store on their own once the site is turned over. This makes it much easier for customers and stores that frequently change their offerings.
